Heading away this Summer for a well deserved break?
Have you been working hard this year and are therefore enjoying a well deserved holiday?
Great! Everyone needs holidays….
Before heading away, make sure you have the following essentials in place for your beloved lifestyle block animals:
- PLENTY of water available and a functional water supply system
- PLENTY of feed available to ensure your animals have enough in the event of a drought (highly likely this year)
- ENSURE your stock are up to date with drenching to protect against Barber’s pole worm (this worm thrives in warm and wet conditions between November and April). Remember, young stock are most susceptible to parasitism.
- ENSURE your animals are protected against facial eczema-this means zinc capsules for sheep and cattle and daily zinc pellets supplementation for alpacas and llamas.
- ENSURE your sheep are covered with a high quality fly-strike preventative product
- ENSURE your sheep and alpacas have been shorn before Christmas at the latest.
- ENSURE your animals are kept in paddocks with plenty of shade available at ALL times of the day. Heat stroke is a serious issue in alpacas and llamas. The minimal animal welfare guidelines require all animals to have shelter available to them.
- MAKE SURE your animals are kept in paddocks that are inaccessible by stray/wandering dogs that may harm your stock.
- ENSURE your stock are checked regularly while you are away on holiday!
Don’t think you have all of these essentials checked off?
