How does veterinary referral work?

A veterinary referral is the act of handing over the care of an unwell animal, from the primary veterinarian that has been caring for that patient, to a veterinarian who has particular skill set, or who is a registered specialist in the appropriate discipline.

What happens once an unwell patient has been referred to us?

We keep your primary/referring veterinarian in the loop and provide them with a summary of the patient’s diagnosis and treatment recommendations in the discharge instructions. Your primary veterinarian may be able to provide the patient with follow-up care after discharge.

The Lifestyle Vet team are not specialists, however we do have expertise in the following

  • Medical workups for complicated camelids and ruminant cases
  • 24/7 hospitalisation and care for unwell patients
  • Basic and advanced imaging for unwell patients (X-ray, ultrasound, CT and MRI)
  • Camelid plasma and blood transfusions
  • Small ruminant and camelid anaesthesia
  • Small ruminant and camelid surgery
  • Camelid skin disease
  • Small ruminant lameness issues
  • Critical neonatal patients
  • Preventative health care guidance for small ruminants and camelids
